Rainbow Bay Interior Design Photography for Design Scout Interiors

Timing is key, we arrived to this beautiful project of Jacinta’s before sunrise, to be mentally prepared for the day ahead, quick coffee and chat as we walk around, to get a good feel of each room, and where the sun was going to hit at what time (a floor plan wasn’t supplied for this photography job, hence the need to get a walk through before we started).

Trying to decide on the compositions for each room, for these kinds of stunning jobs is extremely hard … to try to simplify it, and not over shoot. I could have been there for 3 days to get perfectly styled shots of every composition, in different lighting settings.

So it’s finding the very best, trusting your creative judgment, and going with it with out getting overwhelmed of the many shots that are possible.

Trying to focus on your client in particualr (and not the other businesses that could be purchasing after the shoot) and what their marketing needs are.

Mermaid Waters Project Photography of The Jade House by Interior Designer, Design Scout Interiors

How amazing is this bathroom!!! … but this space gets zero natural sunlight, I knew I needed to do my best to light this room in a natural way, to really get the true colour of the tiles.

How amazing is this bathroom!!! … but this space gets zero natural sunlight, I knew I needed to do my best to light this room in a natural way, to really get the true colour of the tiles.

In the end I use a continuous light outside, and aimed it in to the room, on to the gold reflector, to bounce a warmer light around the room. I didn’t want to busy the space with too many shadows, just wanted a nice warm light to enhance it’s overall look.

Professional photography lighting gives you full control over the light in order to achieve the desired texture and colour on your subjects. You can manipulate the lighting to create dramatic shadows or achieve a diffused and soft look. It’s all about shaping the light to enhance the overall mood and aesthetic of the room.

BONUS TIP

Getting the composition right with my camera on my tripod … having the ipad tethered to my camera, so I can see live what is happening through the lens … means I could stand outside with the light, and move the light around (while holding the iPad) to see exactly what the light was doing in real time, so I could ‘style’ the light exactly how I wanted it. (No running back and forth from the camera to the light, to check and change the lighting).

We have family in Dubbo, so topped in to see them for a week at Easter time on our way home.

It was the most amazing, beautiful experience for us all as a family, the kids were thriving and it was just what we all needed.

So many wonderful memories made. If you can do it with your family, while your kids still like hanging out with you, I would highly recommend it. It took a lot of work to get to that point, but my gosh I would do it again a million times over. It was so so worth it, in so many ways.

Because everyone asks, mine and Mitchs’ absolute favourite stops were.

1/ Kiama, NSW

2/ Kosciusko National Park

3/ Bright, VIC

4/ Wilsons Promontory, VIC

5/ Cradle Mountain and Freycinet National Park, TAS

6/ Lorne - Great Ocean Road, VIC

7/ And the kids loved their week in Melbourne, getting to do Scieneworks, the BBC Earth Experience, Legoland and Dinoland.

I’ve written more, and there are lots more photos and videos on my personal instagram here. You are welcome to check it out, and save stops to visit yourself.

We will continue to travel Australia over the coming years while the kids are at such a great age for it, please get in contact if you are interested in my photography work anywhere in Australia, I’d love to be booking more travelling and work around this beautiful country, and working with more creatives in different locations.

Brisbane Commercial Offices Photography for Gray Puksand

What a challenging shoot! … I was so far out of my comfort zone, with what you may have already noticed … the lights are all on!

I have shoot with downlights on, I’ll often put a feature lighting on, like lamps and wall scones. But I detest downlights. This shoot needed to be done, in a time I was heading away with my family on a 3 month adventure around Australia, I flu back up especially for this shoot for my clients. As it was already a working environment when we photographed it, we could only have access to the space on a weekend date.

I have previously gone over the floor plans, and I had a plan for the day using the natural sunlight that would be beaming through all the windows. We were on site before sunrise, ready to capture this space in it’s best light, only to be meet with a thick layer of cloud cover. There was no sunlight getting through those horrible grey things.

The wether hadn't been great leading up to the shoot, so I had borrowed even more lighting then I usually bring to a shoot, hopeing to rectify the no sunlight problem, but we also only had access to the space for 6 hours, and there was a lot to get through in that time.

In the end, we had to use the downlights … and I cringe at it all … if you don’t know why already, it’s the horrible shadow lines it puts everywhere, and the colour of the lights, changing the colour of all the finishes.

A very ‘not my style’ shoot, ended up coming together so well … the clients are very happy with the end results, and that is all that matters =)

“ I work for a sustainable decorative company, supplying products to architects and designers, and have purchased project images shot by Tanika a couple of times now.
One thing I have to say is that Tanika's photography work is absolutely stunning. She understands her clients' briefs and can capture beautiful spaces, without a doubt! I sure will be recommending Tanika to my co-workers. Great work, Tanika! Keep it up! “ - Celine, Forest One

Gold Coast Photography of The Cottage in Tallebudgera for Trade Co Architectural Hardware

I had the please of photographing The Cottage in Tallebudgera for Trade Co Architectural Hardware, and such a bonus to meet Lisa, who put together this beautiful space.

The shoot was organised with the sunlight in mind, but unfortunately meet with a cloudy day, and no day to move the shoot to, in the hope of more sun.

As I had travelled up from Melbourne to do this shoot, (I was travelling Australia with my young family, when I was called back to do this shoot) … I had minimal gear with me … but I loved the challenge of using what ever I could to make the light work for this lovely space.

The clients were so happy with the final results and so where the home owners.

“Tanika recently shot our country cottage and we couldn't be more impressed with how amazing the photo's turned out. It was a dark, rainy afternoon and Tanika made this work to her advantage as well as creating her own light to get the perfect shots. Thank you so much Tanika! So professional and a dream to work with. We can't wait to work with her again.” Lisa & Roy owners of Custom Built Builders

We did get a tiler in, and painter to do the ceiling. And of course electrical, by Herriott Electrical.

We are so happy with the functionality of this space, for all 4 of us to easily be in this space together. We deliberated on having no bath, but we are so happy we stuck with it. The kids use the small hand held shower, while we use the overhead at the same time.

Why you should hire an editorial style photographer over a real estate photographer

What do editorial style photographers do, that real estate photographers don’t.

Now I’m not saying all real estate photographs, but the low budget real estate photographers, are generally not going to do the following, and an editorial style photographer will (and I always will):

1/they’ll get to know you ahead of the shoot, and what you are really hopping for out of the final photos of the property.

2/ asses the sunlight direction, write out a shoot plan, with the sunlight being the no. 1 priority … this means capturing the property in it’s best natural sunlight scenes.

What do editorial style photographers do, that real estate photographers don’t, and why should you hire a editorial style photographer over a real estate photographer to photograph your next interior design project or airbnb.

1/they’ll get to know you ahead of the shoot, and what you are really hopping for out of the final photos of the property.

2/ asses the sunlight direction, write out a shoot plan, with the sunlight being the no. 1 priority … this means capturing the property in it’s best natural sunlight scenes.

3/ style to camera, they’ll often bring their own homewares props, but will also use what the home has available, they will be using a tripod, and tethering their camera to an iPad or laptop, so that they can walk into the composition, see live what they are about to capture and tweak every homewares and furniture piece, to make for a more appealing photo (if needed, and time allows).

4/ they’ll use fresh flowers and greenery to add warmth, feel and mood to the home.

5/ they use more appealing compositions, having things blurred in the foreground, drawing the eye into the focal point. This really sets the scene and vibe of the property.

6/ they’ll use human figures in the photo, to add to the scale of the portions of the home, and for viewers to imagine themselves in the space.

7/ they’ll think of styling details, like adding ice to the glasses of water, to add more ‘life’ to the photos, with out needing to actually put a person in the photo if it’s not possible for the shoot.

8/ you are definitely more liking to get published using an editorial style photographer over a real estate photographer

Have you got any questions about the difference between a traditional real estate photographer and editorial style photographer, please don’t hesitate to get in contact, I’d love to chat.
