Brisbane Hotel Interior Photography for Mercure Hotels - Spring Hill

Our second shoot for the Brisbane, Spring Hill - Mercure Hotel. This time photographing their newly refurbished rooms, capturing 2 of these incredibly renovated hotel rooms. We were pleased to be able to also lifestyle style these spaces for the shoot. Always an added bit of fun to get to ‘tell the story’ for the shoot.

Our first shoot for this hotel was of their reception/foyer, exterior, pool and conference rooms, you can see this here.

Brisbane Interior Photography for Gray Puksand and McCormack of the McMillian Shakespeare Workspace Project

My favourite thing about Gray Puksand shoots, Anita and the team allow the time to add people into nearly every shot, and it brings so much more life to their photos.

My favourite thing about Gray Puksand shoots, Anita and the team allow the time to add people into nearly every shot, and it brings so much more life to their photos.

This shoot of the McMillian Shakespeare Workspace was completed for both McCormack Builders and Gray Puksand. It was the first of 4 shoots we conducted in one day, something I haven’t attempted before (but just didn’t have the time to come up to Brisbane again anytime soon, so I was very glad all 4 clients were able to do the same day and it all worked out timeline wise with sunlight).

Brisbane Airbnb Photography for Latrobe Airbnb

What a joy to walk into this beautiful home to capture the hard work of it’s owners. We did 4 shoots in one day in Brisbane this day, and this was the last one, it was a big day! … but this warm and inviting interior really kept us going and we knew we needed to do this home justice.

Brisbane Store Photography for Furniture Brand MCM House

I was overjoyed to be asked to photograph MCM House’s brand new store in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, and what a beautiful store to capture. This was a 4 hr shoot photographed the day after the fit out was complete, and the day before it was opened to the public. (I’ve never had a store actually leave a day in between for photography) Unfortunately we had a very overcast/rainy day to work with for this shoot, these shoots aren’t usually able to reschedule because of weather. I would love to re-visit this store in the future to photograph it with natural sunlight streaming in.

This was a 4 hr shoot and I was able to achieve and deliver 30 photos.

Brisbane Interior Photography for Interior Designer, Bhodz Project

Come behind the scenes on another stunning project by Bhodz Project … who knows how to set up photography lighting for this aesthetic?

Problems and solutions in Interior Photography //

Through winter, this property looking over the story bridge in Brisbane, gets no natural sunlight beaming in at all.

The positive of that is we have complete control of the light, and we don’t need to start the shoot at sunrise.

The light was reflecting really blue into the space, so the challenge was to create warmth, trying our best to make it look natural.

A big plus for this kind of photography job is if the project has been fitted with white sheer curtains (if it hasn’t we’ll bring our own to set up for the day) … luckily Bhodi has always got beautiful sheers in his projects.

We set up big folding foam core boards on the balcony as close to the window as we can, to block the blue light, and keep us in control of the lighting. Next we set up just one light, sometimes this also needs a diffuser umbrella on it, to really soften the light, depending on the aesthetic we are trying to achieve for the client. Often the sheer curtains are enough to soften the light, and the umbrella isn’t needed.

Closer to the end of this video you will see a glimpse of our lighting set up.

You could add a flash or another light to brighten the shadows inside, but we like to keep Bhodi’s shoots really soft and moody.

This work is usually done on a very low shutter speed as it is such a low amount of light to be working with. Pro tip, always shoot with a timer, or remote or simply use the iPad to press the shutter, so there’s never any chance of shake from you pressing the trigger on your camera.

Lots more Interior Photography tips like these can be found in my eBooks, a simple, fast and effective way to learn interior photography in your own time, don’t take 10 years to figure it all out on your own like I did.

Brisbane Interior Photography for Architects and Designers, Gray Puksand

Brisbane Interior Photography for Gray Puksand … this is our 3rd shoot for this awesome company, I’m so thrilled every time they contact me.

Using the iPad tethered to the camera is key to getting this style of shoot right, as every piece of furniture is tweaked for each camera angle/shot … being able to walk into frame and see on the large screen exactly what you are doing is what makes these shots possible with such a small team to execute this shoot.

Adding people into these shoots really help show how the space is used, you’ll often spot me in shots for Gray Puksand too, when we just need one more person.

This shoot was smaller but the last shoot for Gray Puksand back in February, we had 6 people in some shots, and that takes a lot to get the positions just right for each person, but so so worth it for the final shots of the bigger commercial spaces.

How to position models, getting the figure blur right and a variety of ideas for using people in interior photography is covered in my interior photography 1:1 mentoring.

Brisbane Commercial Offices Photography for Gray Puksand

What a challenging shoot! … I was so far out of my comfort zone, with what you may have already noticed … the lights are all on!

I have shoot with downlights on, I’ll often put a feature lighting on, like lamps and wall scones. But I detest downlights. This shoot needed to be done, in a time I was heading away with my family on a 3 month adventure around Australia, I flu back up especially for this shoot for my clients. As it was already a working environment when we photographed it, we could only have access to the space on a weekend date.

I have previously gone over the floor plans, and I had a plan for the day using the natural sunlight that would be beaming through all the windows. We were on site before sunrise, ready to capture this space in it’s best light, only to be meet with a thick layer of cloud cover. There was no sunlight getting through those horrible grey things.

The wether hadn't been great leading up to the shoot, so I had borrowed even more lighting then I usually bring to a shoot, hopeing to rectify the no sunlight problem, but we also only had access to the space for 6 hours, and there was a lot to get through in that time.

In the end, we had to use the downlights … and I cringe at it all … if you don’t know why already, it’s the horrible shadow lines it puts everywhere, and the colour of the lights, changing the colour of all the finishes.

A very ‘not my style’ shoot, ended up coming together so well … the clients are very happy with the end results, and that is all that matters =)

“ I work for a sustainable decorative company, supplying products to architects and designers, and have purchased project images shot by Tanika a couple of times now.
One thing I have to say is that Tanika's photography work is absolutely stunning. She understands her clients' briefs and can capture beautiful spaces, without a doubt! I sure will be recommending Tanika to my co-workers. Great work, Tanika! Keep it up! “ - Celine, Forest One

Brisbane Interior Photography for Interior Designer Marina Hirst Interiors

The shoot started off on such a high, interior designer, Marina took me out for breakfast before we started which was so lovely. It’s so wonderful when clients become friends. Photographing Marina’s Chelmer project this time round, a little more challenging then the other shoots had been. We were given a much sunnier day, but a home that doesn’t get a whole stack of natural light coming through. This just means the shoot does slow down quite a bit, with the added lighting tasks, to light each shot the right way.

Brisbane Hotel Photography - of The Johnson Art Series, Penthouse for Accor Hotels

A pleasure to photograph this epic Penthouse for Accor Hotels. The Johnson Art Series in Brisbane is such a beautiful building. We needed the sunlight for this, and so glad it showed it’s face for this shoot (or we would of postponed).

This penthouse needed the natural sunlight to really give it the right feel, such a large beautiful space for a big group to enjoy.
